You may feel mostly fine. A little softer, a little more tired, sleeping less soundly than you did in June. But "fine" is a feeling, and your bloodwork is a record. Long after the last patio dinner, your body is still carrying the metabolic paperwork of the season, and most of it stays invisible until you measure it.
Here's some of what shifts beneath the surface, and how testing brings it into focus.
Your blood sugar has a memory
One of the most useful markers we look at, HbA1c, reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the past three months. It works because glucose attaches to your red blood cells, which live about 120 days, so the number is essentially a slow-moving average of how your metabolism has been handling sugar all summer.
That's why the timing matters. A single sweet weekend won't move it. A season of later meals, more cocktails, more bread baskets, and less movement can. Alongside fasting glucose and insulin, HbA1c tells us whether your body has quietly started working harder to keep blood sugar in range, often well before you'd notice anything at all.
Alcohol shows up in your triglycerides, fast
Of all the lipid markers, triglycerides are the most responsive to how you've been eating and drinking. Alcohol and refined carbohydrates push them up quickly, and a summer of both can leave a visible mark. Paired with LDL, HDL, and ApoB (a more precise read on cardiovascular risk than standard cholesterol alone), triglycerides help us see whether your recent habits have nudged your heart-health picture in the wrong direction.
Your liver keeps the clearest tab
If any organ files an honest report on your summer, it's your liver. Enzymes like GGT and ALT rise when it has been processing more alcohol or storing more fat than it should. GGT in particular is sensitive to drinking, and even modest, sustained elevations are worth catching early, because the liver is also remarkably good at recovering once you give it a reason to.
Inflammation is the quiet one
Poor sleep, extra weight, more alcohol, and less activity all nudge the body toward low-grade inflammation, the kind you can't feel but that sits underneath a surprising amount of long-term health risk. A marker called hs-CRP lets us measure it directly. It rarely announces itself in symptoms, which is exactly why it's worth putting on paper.
Your hormones felt the short nights
Sleep is the hinge that summer tends to bend. When it's disrupted for weeks, cortisol rhythms flatten and the hormones downstream follow. In many people that shows up as shifts in testosterone, thyroid markers, or the balance of stress hormones that govern how energetic, or how wired-and-tired, you feel day to day. These are the changes people describe as "just feeling off," and they're some of the most satisfying to correct once you can actually see them.
Why one number is never the story
Any single marker can be misread in isolation. The reason we run a broad panel, 200+ markers rather than the handful on a routine physical, is that meaningful change usually shows up as a pattern: glucose drifting while triglycerides climb while inflammation ticks up while sleep-related hormones dip. No one of those might flag at an annual visit. Together, they tell a coherent story about where your fall should start.
The genuinely good news
Almost everything above moves in both directions. The same systems that drifted over a lazy, indulgent summer respond, often quickly, to protein, sleep, movement, and a few targeted interventions. The point of testing now isn't to hand you a verdict. It's to give you a clear, personal map while the changes are still small, still recent, and still easy to reverse.
