You read the forever chemicals article. You looked up the Dirty Dozen. And now you are wondering how much damage has already been done.
Here is the most important thing we can tell you. Your body was built for this.
Not for the volume of chemical exposure we are dealing with today, but for the fundamental challenge of filtering, neutralizing, and eliminating what does not belong. Your liver, kidneys, and gut have been doing this work your entire life. The goal of functional medicine is to make sure that system is running at full capacity so it can handle what your environment throws at it.
Here is how you support it:
• Wash your produce the right way. Rinsing under water alone removes very little. Fill a bowl with cold water, add a teaspoon of baking soda, and soak for 12 to 15 minutes. Studies show this removes significantly more surface residue than water alone.
• Feed your liver what it needs. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower activate the liver enzymes that break down and clear harmful compounds. Not as a cleanse. As a consistent habit.
• Use fiber as your cleanup crew. Fiber binds to toxins in the digestive tract and carries them out before they can be reabsorbed. Aim for 30 to 40 grams daily from whole food sources. If your fiber intake is low, your body is recycling what it should be eliminating.
• Hydrate with intention. Half your body weight in ounces of water daily is a solid baseline. Most people are chronically under-hydrated and do not realize it is slowing their ability to clear toxins.
• Go local whenever you can. Farmers markets are opening up and locally grown produce is fresher, travels shorter distances, and is far more likely to be grown with fewer chemicals even without an organic certification. Talk to the farmers. Ask how they grow. Shopping local this spring is not just a lifestyle choice. It is a strategic health decision.
• Test your gaps. Magnesium and B vitamins are essential for liver detox pathways and among the most commonly depleted nutrients in high performers. You cannot optimize a system you have not measured. This is exactly what we test for and address directly.
• Protect your sleep. While you sleep your body runs its deepest repair and clearance cycles. Seven to nine hours is not a luxury. It is infrastructure.
You cannot control everything in your environment. But you can control how well your body is equipped to handle it.
That is what we are here to help you build.
Ready to find out how well your detox pathways are actually functioning? We test for it.
